BWC 2010: The Rules

1. Organisation Brompton Bicycle Ltd will organise the fourth Brompton World Championship [the Event], which will take place at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England on Sunday 3rd October 2010.

2. Definition of the Event The Event will consist of a Brompton bicycle race of 13.15 kilometres, two laps of a closed circuit of 6.575km. The circuit will be marshalled and marked by fencing and tape. It is a British Cycling registered event.

3. Participants Participants must be 16 years or over (or 12 and over if accompanied by a responsible adult), riding a Brompton and in general good health; there are no other restrictions on grounds of gender or nationality, etc. The Event is currently limited to 750 participants. Bicycles must be in a safe condition; organisers reserve the right to refuse participation, should a participant’s bike, in our sole judgement, be considered unsafe for competition. Children or pets may not be carried on bicycles during the Event.

4. Categories All participants will be entered in the individual category (A), within which there will be sub-classifications for male, female, younger and older participants. Participants may also be entered in the team category (B); teams will be constituted of a minimum of three participants and a maximum of five. To classify, at least three members of a team must finish the race; team classification will be determined by the aggregated times of every team’s top three finishers.
Junior category: must be no younger than 12 and no older than 18, on the day of the event.
Veterans category: participants to be 50 and over on the day of the event.

5. Dress code All participants, both male and female, must wear a suit jacket, collared shirt and neck tie. Shorts, three-quarter length trousers and skirts may be worn if preferred, though sports attire (e.g. Lycra shorts/leggings, tracksuit pants, etc.) is not permitted. There are no restrictions on shoe-wear. For health and safety reasons, it is an absolute condition of participation that a helmet is worn.

6. Advertising Participants may wear promotional logos or advertising slogans on their clothing subject to a pre-payment of £30. Teams sporting such advertising on their outfits must pay £100 for similar rights at the Event. No such advertising is permitted on the bikes, and any advertising must on no account obscure the participants’ numbers on their bikes.

7. Registration Registration is online through the Brompton website: www.brompton.co.uk/bwc/2010; the deadline for registration is Sunday 19th September 2010 or when the race is full, whichever occurs first. Registrations are only valid upon the payment of the entry fee of £24.00, which includes entrance to the palace grounds. Entry fees, payment for coach tickets and payment for jerseys cannot be refunded once processed, unless the event is cancelled.
Should the event be cancelled, we will refund any entry fees and coach fares. In the event of cancellation, all purchased jerseys will be mailed out to participants, free of charge, as it will not be possible to collect them on the day.

8. Race materials All participants are to collect their electronic race chip and race numbers in person on the day of the event.

9. Prizes The three fastest male and female finishers will receive awards, as will the top-placed Junior, the top placed male and female Veterans, and the best-dressed competitors, male and female. There will also be prizes awarded to the fastest three teams, as well as the fastest Veteran team. The top-placed male and female competitors will each receive a limited edition S6L; details of the other prizes can be found on the website as and when they are confirmed.

10. Race timing All bikes will be equipped with a small chip supplied with the race numbers. Participants are asked to take care not to confuse the chip provided by the Event organisers with any chip they may own themselves, and to return the chips at the end of the Event; each unreturned chip will be charged.

11. Accidents and damage All participants taking part in the Event do so entirely at their own risk. Neither Brompton Bicycle Ltd, nor any of its organising partners, warrants expressly or by implication the safety of participants, nor do the same offer any guarantees against damage, loss or harm to property, or against injury or death to participants or other. Neither publication of these rules, nor a participant’s compliance with them, shall be taken to confer any liability on the organisers of the Event.

12. Challenges to results The organisers shall hear all challenges concerning any results of the Event immediately after the same have been announced. Such challenges will only be heard and adjudicated upon after the conclusion of the race, and all decisions will be final; on no account will the race be stopped to adjudicate on any protest.

13. Acceptance of the rules By registering for and taking part in the Event, participants indicate that they understand and accept, completely and without any variation, the rules of the Event and the stipulations contained therein. If one participant  registers on behalf of another participant [a Secondary participant] (for example in the case of the team event), it is the responsibility of the individual actually entering the Secondary participant's details into the registraion system, to ensure that the Secondary participant is aware of the rules of the Event.
